Union Jacks along Albert Street Bridge note Queen's long reign

The City of Regina has placed Union Jacks along the Albert Street Memorial Bridge to commemorate the long reign of Queen Elizabeth.

As of Wednesday, the Queen became the longest-reigning monarch in British history (63 years and 217 days), surpassing the previous record of her great grandmother Queen Victoria.

The bells of Knox Metropolitan church in downtown Regina rang in celebration.

"This is a historic occasion and milestone, which as Canada's Queen City, we will mark with respect and pride," Regina's mayor, Michael Fougere, said.

Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield spent part of the day visiting residents at Broadway Terrace in Regina.

Ruth Summersides, dressed as Queen Victoria, was at Knox Metropolitan Church for the bell ringing.

She said the Queen is a symbol of stability.

"We've had the monarchy for so long in England," Summersides said. "It is very stable. The Queen is very stable. The rest of the family might not be, but she's very stable."
