UPEI ranks 3rd in Atlantic Canada universities for popular Twitter feed

UPEI, faculty reach tentative deal

The University of Prince Edward Island has the third most popular Twitter feed in Atlantic Canada when it comes to Canadian universities.

The ranking comes after Twitter Canada completed a study of all 97 universities across Canada to determine their use of Twitter. It monitored how each account tracks followers, along with the accompanying tweets.

It found the top 10 universities with the most followers were also the largest and UPEI was one of the only small universities that was near the top of that list.

UPEI ranked 30th overall. It has 13,500 followers which is more than triple the enrolment numbers. The ranking is just below Dalhousie, and the University of Ottawa.

Twitter Canada said UPEI "punched above its weight" at getting the high ranking because it uses the site as a source of information for students and alumni, as well as conversation.

"I was really blown away, I think that it's a testament to people's affection in regard for the university," said Krista Grant, head of UPEI's Marketing and Communications.

"I think that, even though it's a digital platform, we work very hard to maintain personal connections with people which I think is the essence of UPEI and PEI for that matter."

Grant said in September, UPEI will be using social media to monitor concerns and questions from new students, such as finding classrooms, and having the proper resources.
