US air quality index: See maps of AQI in New York, DC, across the country

Air quality has been a hot button issue across the country this summer as wildfires in Canada have pushed smoke and other particulates into the air.

According to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, there are currently over 570 blazes "out of control."

While the air quality in most of America is good at the moment, it is an issue that could persist this summer, as the Canadian wildfires are showing no signs of going away.

As of Thursday morning, New York City and Washington, D.C. have the two worst air quality conditions in America, according to IQ Air’s live ranking of major world cities, which ranks the cities 16th and 17th, respectively.

Both cities’ air quality is in the “moderate” category. According to the EPA’s Air Quality Index, this means the air quality is acceptable, however pollution in this range may pose a moderate health concern for a very small number of individuals.

People who are unusually sensitive to ozone or particle pollution may experience respiratory symptoms.

Health experts advise Americans under air quality advisories to stay indoors with air conditioning or to wear N95 masks outside.
