Londoner Jake Marlowe confirmed dead in Hamas attacks as Israel issues ‘hostile aircraft’ alert

A Londoner who went missing when Hamas terrorists attacked a dance festival in Israel has died, it was confirmed on Wednesday.

Arsenal fan Jake Marlowe had not been seen since the invasion early on Saturday morning when he was providing security for a music event in the desert near Kibbutz Re'im, close to the Gaza border.

Meanwhile, Israel urged citizens in the north to shelter saying “hostile aircraft” had entered from Lebanon.

Ground offensive by Israel looks increasingly likely

09:31 , Lydia Chantler-Hicks

Israel appears increasingly likely to launch a ground offensive into Gaza.

The 25-mile-long strip of land wedged among Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea is home to 2.3 million Palestinians and has been governed by Hamas since 2007.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, speaking to soldiers near the Gaza fence, said on Tuesday: “We started the offensive from the air, later on we will also come from the ground. We’ve been controlling the area since Day 2 and we are on the offensive. It will only intensify.”

One Israeli security source told news agency Reuters a ground offensive now looked inevitable.

“People feared the bombardment of the border area was a tactic to create scorched earth before tanks advance,” said Yamen Hamad, a father of four who fled with his family and others from Beit Hanoun near Gaza’s north border, where blast craters have made roads impassable and buildings nearby have been turned into rubble.

A ground offensive carries risks for Israel, notably to the lives of many hostages held in the narrow, densely populated Gaza Strip which is tightly controlled by Hamas.

The US said it was talking with Israel and Egypt about the idea of safe passage for civilians from Gaza, now under total blockade.
