Veggie shortage hits fast food chains
Some fast food chains in North America are limiting the servings of some vegetables on their sandwiches after a frost hit crops in California and Mexico.
Subway and Wendy's are experiencing shortages in tomatoes and green peppers. A spokesperson for Subway described it as an industry-wide shortage.
Subway is planning to bring in different varieties, including oblong tomatoes and smaller green peppers, that they did not previously use to make up for the shortage. The vegetables will taste the same, but do not have the uniform look the fast-food chain strives for.
Subway does not expect the shortage to last much longer, as harvests will soon begin in other areas not affected by the frost.
A frost on the Florida crop caused a similar problem for fast food chains last year.
