'A very passionate guy': Maritime Fishermen's Union leader remembered by PEIFA

CETA 'definitely a good deal for fishers,' says PEIFA

Maritime Fishermen's Union executive director Christian Brun will be greatly missed, says the P.E.I. Fishermen's Association.

The 46-year-old died in a head-on crash Monday morning near Miramichi.

PEIFA president Craig Avery said he and Brun didn't always agree on issues, but Brun was a passionate supporter of the fishing industry and of coastal communities.

"I've known him for years and, you know, we've obviously sat across the table on many different issues, and we've sat together on many different issues," said Avery.

"A very passionate guy, a very intelligent person, and a real good representative for the fishermen that he was representing in New Brunswick. And he'll definitely be missed, and very hard to replace."

Cause of accident undetermined

Brun had been with the MFU since 2004. Before that he worked in international development in Africa.

Avery said he has driven the stretch of highway Brun died on, and he says there are crosses from previous fatal accidents in a number of places along the road.

Police investigators say they are still trying to determine the cause of the crash, which happened on dry pavement and in good weather.
