Photos show how the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show changed during its 23-year history
Victoria's Secret will be streaming its first fashion show since 2018 on September 26.
It previously hosted its famous runway 23 times between 1995 and 2018.
Photos taken over the years show the event's daring lingerie, famous models, and more.
Susie Heller and Celia Fernandez contributed to an earlier version of this article.
The first Victoria's Secret Fashion Show took place at the New York City Plaza Hotel in 1995.
Models who walked the runway that year wore slinky slips and shiny bras.
By 1996, the runway had a more high-fashion focus.
Baby-doll dresses were prominently featured at the time.
But it really started to become a bigger deal by 1998.
Victoria's Secret models wore themed costumes and Angel wings for the first time that year, and the stage design was more extravagant than in years past.
By 1999, Angel wings had become the show's focal point.
The show had an ethereal feel, with some models even soaring through the air above the runway.
And models like Tyra Banks were owning the runway.
Banks walked the runway that year in silver lingerie with a billowing cape behind her.
In 2000, the show was held at the Cannes Film Festival as a part of the Cinema Against AIDS gala.
Models like Gisele Bündchen walked the runway that year.
In 2001, the show moved to Bryant Park in New York City.
The brand's Angel wings had grown massively by the early 2000s, with some even coated in glitter.
The 2002 show was also held in New York City but at a different venue, the Lexington Avenue Armory.
One of the show's most memorable moments — and one of the most iconic moments ever in the show's history — happened when Gisele Bündchen was followed down the runway by PETA protestors who were angered by the model wearing fur.
During those early years, Victoria's Secret began to recognize a core group of models including Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks, and Gisele Bündchen.
The three Victoria's Secret Angels walked the 2003 runway alongside Karolina Kurkova, Adriana Lima, and other legendary models.
After a hiatus in 2004, Victoria's Secret debuted its biggest wings yet in 2005.
The accessory was worn by Heidi Klum, who also donned a light-up lingerie set. She wore them while being serenaded down the runway by her then-husband Seal.
2006 was the year of Victoria's Secret's playful sub-brand Pink.
The brand's faceless dog made an appearance onstage alongside models at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, California.
In addition to Angel wings, Victoria's Secret models began wearing other large accessories in the early 2000s.
Heidi Klum walked the runway that year while wearing a silver lingerie set and a giant snowflake on her back.
The 2008 show was held at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida.
Outfits were dramatic as always that year, and models like Selita Ebanks stole the show while Usher performed.
In 2009, the fashion show returned to the Lexington Avenue Armory in New York City.
Some of the runway looks were more casual that year, and models debuting Pink outfits got to wear artistic pairs of wings.
But Victoria's Secret always aimed bigger every year. Just look at the wings in 2010.
Karolina Kurkova wore some of the biggest wings that year. Hers were made from peacock feathers in giant circles that extended across the catwalk.
In 2011, Victoria's Secret opted for a superhero-themed spectacle.
Kanye West performed, the runway was covered in sparkles, and models like Karlie Kloss donned Avengers-style leotards, capes, and boots.
Before Savage X Fenty existed, Rihanna performed at the 2012 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
She performed in different lingerie-inspired outfits alongside models like Sui He.
The 2013 show wasn't too much of a departure from other years.
Models wore colorful lingerie with feathered wings and walked down a glitter-covered catwalk.
The following year, however, was the complete opposite with a changing stage.
Not only were there giant props onstage throughout the show, but the runway itself was a screen that changed patterns to match the outfits being modeled.
It was also the first and only year that Victoria's Secret featured two Fantasy Bras onstage.
The bras, valued at $2 million each, were modeled by Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio.
In 2015, the show featured fashion it-girls like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner.
Though Jenner didn't wear wings onstage, her outfit did feature a wide, flowing skirt.
It was also the year that Maria Borges wore her hair natural on the runway for the first time.
"I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria's Secret show with my natural hair," Borges told Essence at the time. "I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said 'yes' I didn't expect it, but I was so happy!"
The 2016 fashion show was held in Paris, France.
Of the 51 women who walked in the show that year, 18 of them were newbies.
And the 2017 event was held at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China.
56 models walked the runway that year, including 13 Angels and 14 newcomers.
But in 2018, the show returned to New York City after two years abroad.
Of the 60 models who walked in the show, 18 were newcomers.
That year, Kelsey Merritt made history as the first Filipino woman to walk in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
Then 22 years old, the model shared an Instagram video of her emotional reaction to being cast in the show.
It was confirmed in 2019 that the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show would not return.
Leslie Wexner, the former CEO of the brand's parent company L Brands, originally sent an email to employees that the runway show would "evolve" and not be broadcast on network TV, according to Harper's Bazaar.
Viewership of the show dropped after Ed Razek, the former chief marketing officer of L Brands, said in a 2018 interview with Vogue that he didn't believe the annual fashion show should feature "transsexuals" because "the show is a fantasy."
Razek later issued a formal apology, but less than a year later, Victoria's Secret announced it was not moving forward with its annual event at all.
Victoria's Secret announced in 2021 that it would bring back its annual fashion show without its famous Angels.
Victoria's Secret CEO Martin Water told investors at the time that the company was going to "get back into the fashion show business" and "redefine it in a way that's culturally relevant," according to CNBC.
Then in June 2021, Victoria's Secret announced there would be no more Angels. Instead, the brand partnered with a group of inspirational women including Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Megan Rapinoe to be part of a new group called the VS Collective.
Some members of the group will be featured in "The Tour '23," a new take on the fashion show that's part runway and part documentary. The show will stream on Prime Video beginning on September 26.
