Budapest vigil for 71 found dead on Austrian motorway

Budapest residents and migrants came together in the Hungarian capital to hold a candlelit vigil for seventy one people who were found dead in the back of a truck in Austria. Authorities believe the truck began its journey in Hungary. Hungarian police have arrested several people in connection with the deaths. A number of Bulgarians and at least one Afghan are thought to be among those detained. Around 20 people are believed to have been questioned. Among the dozens found trapped in the vehicle were four children, including a baby girl. The nationalities of those inside have not yet been determined, although a Syrian travel document was found on one of the bodies. Budapest resident, Csaba Pogonyi, attended the vigil. “It is horrific,” he said. “There are no words to describe how horrific it is. There are so many people responsible for this that it would take too long to list. I think, from this tragedy, we should should at last sit up and take notice that the Mediterranean is not the only place where hundreds die. Here in Hungary, the same dangers threaten these people in cars and trucks.” Patrol workers discovered the abandoned truck on an Austrian motorway near the Hungarian border. Those inside appeared to have been dead for up to two days before being discovered.
