Chirp, chirp! Building bird nests across Belarus
Meet Belarus’ bird man
Ornithologist Vladimir Ivanovsky
has built over 695 artificial nests
Location: Vitebsk Region
for birds of all shapes and sizes to call home
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) ORNITHOLOGIST, VLADIMIR IVANOVSKY, SAYING:
"First, I thought up the theoretical method of attracting birds of prey. For this, you need to know the biology of the birds, so I needed to find as many natural nests as I could. Analyze their location, how, where, on which trees, in which part of the crown, and so on - even which direction the light should fall on the nest."
The 73-year-old scientist
has dedicated his life to studying birds
But with fewer places for birds to nest
He says the country's avian population may be at risk
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) ORNITHOLOGIST, VLADIMIR IVANOVSKY, SAYING:
"Very intensive forestry is being carried out in Belarus, our forests are becoming younger very quickly and it's becoming harder and harder to find predatory birds that make their nests in the trees."
