Rhinos and Hippos Treated to 'Spa Day' at Australian Zoo

Staff at Werribee Open Range Zoo treated some of their largest residents to a “spa day” amid rising spring temperatures.

Zookeepers pampered six southern white rhinos to full body mud-masks, while five hippos were misted with bath oil and manuka honey ointment to prevent dry, chapped skin.

The zoo said the skincare routine is an “integral” part of both animals’ healthcare and occurs more frequently in winter and spring.

The treatments supplements their natural behavior of dipping into ponds and mud wallows, which helps them rehydrate and to regulate body temperature. Credit: Werribee Open Range Zoo via Storyful
