Below are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer high school athlete of the week.

This week’s nominees

Hunter Bates, Weddington indoor track: The Warriors’ sophomore ran a school and personal-record 1:05.77 to win the 500-meter dash at the Marvin Ridge Polar Bear on Jan. 24.

Bates also ran a personal-best 4:17.02 to win the 1,600-meter run at the Charlotte City Championship at Cuthbertson on Jan. 27.

Amare Bethel, Charlotte Country Day basketball: The 6-foot-3 junior scored 22 points, grabbed five steals, four rebounds, two steals and two assists in a 47-45 win at Charlotte Christian.

Isaiah Denis, Davidson Day basketball: The 6-5 junior scored 17 points and had five assists in an 81-11 win over Statesville Christian Jan. 23.

Denis also scored 33 points and had six assists in a 78-60 victory over SouthLake Christian Jan. 25.

Denis finished off the week with 21 points and five assists in a 58-55 win at Providence Day Jan. 27.

Austin Flowers, Charlotte Latin wrestling: The Hawks’ senior had a third period pin at 175 pounds to help Charlotte Latin to a 40-37 win over Metrolina Christian Jan. 23.

Flowers also had a pin in a 64-18 victory over Charlotte Catholic Jan. 25.

Raghav Gopalakrishnan, Ardrey Kell indoor track: The Knights’ senior ran a 9:23.74 to win the 3,200-meter run at the Charlotte City Championship at Cuthbertson Jan. 27.

Gopalakrishnan, the reigning Charlotte Observer boys’ cross country runner of the year, is a University of Pennsylvania commit.

Shamari Johnson, Rocky River basketball: The 6-4 senior scored 24 points, had 11 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in a 66-57 win at East Mecklenburg on Jan. 26.

Johnson is averaging 15.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocks per game for Rocky River (9-10).

Anderson Lee, Northwest Cabarrus basketball: The 6-foot senior scored 25 points, had five rebounds, two assists and four steals in a 68-66 loss to Concord on Jan. 23.

Lee also scored eight points in a 75-57 win at Lake Norman Charter on Jan. 26.

Tre McKinnon, Lake Norman basketball: The 6-5 junior scored 26 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in an 89-54 win at rival Mooresville on Jan. 23.

McKinnon also scored 15 points in a 77-58 victory at Hickory Ridge on Jan. 25.

McKinnon is averaging 14.5 points, four rebounds and one steal per game Lake Norman team (17-1).

Nate Quiroz, Hough wrestling: The Huskies’ senior won his match in the heavyweight division to help Hough seal its second round 4A dual state playoff win over host Mallard Creek on Jan. 27.

Hough also beat East Mecklenburg in the first round on the same day.

Brian Rowe, Jay M. Robinson basketball: The 5-8 junior scored 23 points, had five assists and three steals in an 89-66 win over Carson on Jan. 23.

Rowe also scored 11 points in a 67-50 win over Concord on Jan. 25.

The next night, Rowe had 33 points, four rebounds and four assists in an 88-44 win over South Rowan.

Rowe is averaging 13.5 points per game for Jay M. Robinson (12-5).

Kyle Roy, Union Academy swimming: The Cardinals’ junior captain won the Yadkin Valley 1A/2A conference title in the 100 butterfly (56.81) and 500 freestyle (5:47.11) while helping the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay to league titles on Jan. 23.

Roy, the Yadkin Valley 1A/2A conference boys’ swimmer of the year, led the Union Academy boys’ to a runner-up conference championship finish.

Quay Watson, Hopewell basketball: The 5-11 senior scored 29 points to lead Hopewell to a 76-64 win over Harding Jan. 26.

Watson is a UNC Pembroke commit.
