Below are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer high school athlete of the week.

This week’s nominees

Isaiah Denis, Davidson Day basketball: The 6-foot-5 junior scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists to lead Davidson Day to a 74-64 win over Greenfield School to claim the NCISAA 2A state championship Feb. 24.

Denis also had 30 points and three rebounds in a 70-57 victory over Burlington Christian in the state semifinals Feb. 20.

Denis opened the week with 32 points, four rebounds and two assists in an 83-72 win at Trinity Christian in the NCISAA 2A state quarterfinals Feb. 20.

Davidson Day finished 24-7 this season.

Delani Hammonds, Ardrey Kell basketball: The 6-foot senior point guard had eight points, eight assists and four rebounds to lead Ardrey Kell to a 66-43 win over Olympic in the first round of the SoMeck 4A conference tournament Feb. 20.

Hammonds had 18 points, four rebounds and six assists in a 73-72 win over South Mecklenburg in the conference tournament semifinals Feb. 22.

The next night, Hammonds scored 15 points to go with three assists and two steals in a 52-50 loss to Myers Park in the SoMeck 4A conference tournament championship game.

Hammonds is averaging 12.9 points, 6.4 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game for Ardrey Kell (19-8) this season.

Santana Lynch, Lake Norman basketball: The 6-5 junior scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds in an 81-48 win over Cox Mill in the Greater Metro 4A conference semifinals Feb. 22.

The next night, Lynch scored 16 points to lead Lake Norman to a 67-53 win over Hickory Ridge in the conference championship game.

Lynch is averaging 14 points, nine rebounds, and four assists for Lake Norman (24-2).

Robert Magner, Pine Lake Prep basketball: The 6-6 senior scored 26 points, had three rebounds, five assists and three steals in 65-48 win in the first round Catawba Shores’ 1A/2A conference tournament on Feb. 19.

Magner also had 26 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 62-57 victory over Lincoln Charter in the conference semifinals on Feb. 21.

Magner finished off the week with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in an 85-68 loss to Corvian Charter in the conference championship game on Feb. 23.

Magner is averaging 17.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and two assists per game for Pine Lake Prep (19-8).

R.J. Moore, Jr., Corvian Charter basketball: The 6-4 freshman scored 16 points, had three rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block in a 60-41 win over Langtree Charter in the opening round of the Catawba Shores’ 1A/2A conference tournament on Feb. 19.

Moore, Jr. had 13 points, three rebounds and two assists in a 61-49 conference semifinal win over Community School of Davidson on Feb. 21.

Moore, Jr. had 29 points to go with three rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 85-68 victory over Pine Lake Prep in the Catawba Shores’ 1A/2A tournament championship game on Feb. 23.

Moore, Jr. is averaging 14.4 points and 5.4 rebounds for a Corvian Charter team (22-3) that has won 13 straight games through Monday.

Peter Moye, South Mecklenburg basketball: The 6-3 senior scored 34 points, including in the fourth quarter, to go with seven rebounds, in a 73-72 loss to Ardrey Kell in the SoMeck 4A conference tournament semifinals on Feb. 22.

Moye is averaging 21.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

Xavier Perry, Victory Christian basketball: The 5-10 senior scored 16 points in a 55-54 win over Northside Christian in the NCISAA 1A state semifinals Feb. 20.

Perry also scored a team-high 12 points to lead Victory Christian to a 48-44 win over United Faith in the NCISAA 1A state championship game at Ravenscroft on Feb. 23.

Victory Christian finished the season 28-8 this season.

Zaiyir Phillips, Hunter Huss basketball: The 5-11 freshman scored 13 points, had five rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 53-43 win over South Point in the opening round of the Big South 3A conference tournament on Feb. 19.

Phillips exploded for 27 points, seven rebounds, 12 assists and one steal in an 88-82 victory over Crest in the conference semifinals on Feb. 21.

Phillips finished off the tournament with six points, seven rebounds, three assists and a block in a 75-61 win over Kings Mountain to claim the Big South 3A conference title on Feb. 23.

Phillips is averaging 13.1 points, five assists, 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 steals for Hunter Huss (14-12).

Tyler Showalter, Butler Basketball: The 6-7 senior scored 23 points, including the game-winning free throws with 0.1 second left to give Butler a 54-52 win over Independence to claim the Southwestern 4A (SW4A) tournament championship on Feb. 23.

Showalter, who had all 10 of Butler’s points in the fourth quarter, also had six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in the victory.

Showalter also scored 15 points, grabbed six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in a 76-62 win over Rocky River in the tournament semifinals Feb. 22.

Showalter opened the week with 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 66-23 first round victory over Garinger Feb. 20.

Showalter is averaging 22.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal per game for Butler (19-8).

K.J. Younger, Weddington basketball: The 6-5 junior scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Weddington to a 52-51 overtime victory over Marvin Ridge to win the Southern Carolinas’ conference (SCC) tournament championship Feb. 23.

Younger also scored 12 points, had four rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block in a 75-30 win over Porter Ridge in the SCC tournament semifinals Feb. 21.

Younger is averaging 22.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.9 steals for a Weddington team (25-1) that has won 14 straight games through Monday.
