Here are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer high school athlete of the week.

Nicole Alfers, Christ the King Cross Country: The Crusaders’ junior ran a 19:06.10 to win the Friday Night Lights’ Cross Country Festival at the Ivey Redmon Sports’ Complex in Kernersville Sept. 8.
Alfers’ run also helped the Christ the King girls’ cross country team to a 20th-place finish at the same event.
Ana Azpilicueta, Hickory Ridge Golf: The Ragin’ Bulls’ senior shot a 5-over-par 41 to finish second individually in the Greater Metro 4A conference match at Skybrook Golf Club in Huntersville Sept. 5.
Azpilicueta helped her team to a sixth-place finish at the same match.
Emily Eaton, Covenant Day Field Hockey: The Lions’ senior scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Forsyth Country Day Sept. 5.
Eaton also scored five goals in a 7-1 victory over Durham Academy.
Eaton has nine goals for Covenant Day (2-2) this season.
Grace Hanson, Weddington Cross Country: The Warriors’ senior ran a 17:59.60 to finish third in the Girls’ Championship 5K at the Friday Night Lights’ Cross Country Festival at Ivey Redmon Sports’ Complex in Kernersville Sept. 8.
Hanson, a University of North Carolina commit, also helped the Weddington girls’ cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the same event.
Kirstan Hodges, West Cabarrus Golf: The Wolverines’ sophomore shot a 3-over-par 39 to earn medalist honors in the Greater Metro 4A conference match at Skybrook Golf Club in Huntersville Sept. 5.
Hodges had a birdie and four pars in her round without any range practice before the match because the range was closed, according to West Cabarrus golf coach Anthony Bethea.
Halle Horton, Davidson Day Volleyball: The Patriots’ junior outside hitter had 13 kills and three digs in a 3-0 win at Hickory Grove Sept. 5.
Horton also had 14 kills and two digs in a 3-0 victory over Statesville Christian Sept. 7.
Horton has 155 kills, 27 digs and five blocks for a Davidson Day team (12-1) that has won seven straight games.
Abby Kerrins, Charlotte Country Day Cross Country: The Buccaneers’ junior ran a personal-best 18:18.88 to win the individual title at the Wilmington Beach Blast on Olsen Park course Sept. 8.
Kerrins’ run also helped the Charlotte Country Day girls’ cross country team to victory in Wilmington as five Buccaneers’ runners placed in the top 10, averaging a time of 18:45.
Chloe McVeigh, Palisades Volleyball: The Pumas’ senior libero had 12 digs, three assists and an ace in a 3-0 win at South Mecklenburg Sept. 5.
The next day, McVeigh had 12 more digs, three assists and an ace in 3-0 sweep of Hopewell.
McVeigh closed out the week with eight digs and two assists in a 3-0 victory at Olympic Sept. 7.
McVeigh has 147 digs, 28 assists and 24 aces for a Palisades team (8-1) that has won seven straight games and is in first-place in the SoMeck 4A conference.
Ava Palmer, Lake Norman Charter Golf: The Knights’ sophomore shot a 2-over-par 38 to earn medalist honors in a South Piedmont conference (SPC) match at Rocky River golf course Sept. 5.
Palmer’s play helped the Lake Norman Charter girls’ golf team to victory at the seven-team SPC match.
Lila Pearson, Langtree Charter Cross Country: The Lions’ sophomore ran a personal-best 23:05 to win the Green Race at the Myers Park Invitational Sept. 9.
Pearson’s efforts also led the Langtree Charter girls’ cross country team to a runner-up in the same race.
Meg Tebben, Charlotte Catholic Field Hockey: The Cougars’ sophomore scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in a 2-1 overtime win over Providence Day Sept. 6.
Tebben has four goals and five assists for Charlotte Catholic (3-2) this season.
Melanie Watson, Ardrey Kell Field Hockey: The Knights’ junior defender led Ardrey Kell to a 5-0 shutout victory at South Mecklenburg Sept. 5.
Two days later, Watson had eight interceptions and a game-changing goal line save in a 4-2 win at Providence.
Watson finished off the week with another goal-line save in a 3-2 win at Asheville.
Watson has 126 interceptions for Ardrey Kell (5-2) this season.
