Below are the nominees for The Herald’s high school athlete of the week.

Aiden Cherikos, Legion Collegiate boys’ basketball: The 5-foot-10 senior scored 26 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and one block in a 67-55 win over Legacy Early College, Feb. 16.

Cherikos is averaging 18.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game for Legion Collegiate (5-15) this season.

Jarrett Eubanks, Catawba Ridge wrestling: The Copperheads’ senior won the 175-pound title at the S.C. 4A Upper State Tournament at Northwestern, Feb. 17.

Eubanks, who earned his 150th career win in the semifinals, is 53-1 overall this season.

Zyan Hager, Catawba Ridge boys’ basketball: The 6-foot-2 senior scored 17 points, had five assists, four steals and one rebound in an 81-38 win over Wade Hampton in the first round of the 4A state playoffs, Feb. 14.

Hager also scored 32 points, grabbed five rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 78-49 win over Greenwood in the second round, Feb. 17.

Hager is averaging 19.1 points, 2.7 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game for Catawba Ridge (24-3) this season.

Layla Jones, Rock Hill girls’ basketball: The 5-foot-6 senior had six rebounds, five steals, one assist, four deflections and one block in a 71-31 win over Byrnes in the second round of the 5A state playoffs, Feb. 16.

Jones also scored two points, had five rebounds, three steals and three deflections in a 64-37 victory over T.L. Hanna in the opening round of the playoffs, Feb. 13.

Jones is averaging 3.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.2 steals and one assist per game for Rock Hill (25-3) this season.

Coach Kennan Orr says Jones “doesn’t need to score a point to affect a game,” as a lockdown defender.

Mason Mitchell, Northwestern boys’ basketball: The 6-foot-5 scored a career-high 29 points, including six three-pointers, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks in a 65-52 loss at Westwood in the first round of the 4A state playoffs, Feb. 14.

Mitchell averaged 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals per for Northwestern (11-16) this season.

Victoria Morris, South Pointe girls’ basketball: The 5-foot-11 senior scored 26 points, had 14 rebounds, three steals, one assist and one block in a 65-38 win over Eastside in the opening round of the 4A state playoffs, Feb. 14

Morris also had 22 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and two blocks in a 63-24 victory over Greenwood in the second round, Feb. 17.

Morris is averaging 18 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.9 steals per game for a South Pointe squad (26-2) that has won 24 consecutive games this season.

Chris Propst, Northwestern wrestling: The Trojans’ senior won the 113-pound title at the S.C. 4A Upper State Tournament on his home mat, Feb. 17.

Propst is 32-7 overall this season.

A.J. Washington, Fort Mill boys’ basketball: The 6-foot-3 sophomore scored 22 points, had seven rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block in a 59-51 win over Woodmont in the first round of the 5A state playoffs, Feb. 14.

Washington also scored 15 points, three rebounds and two steals in a 66-43 loss at Byrnes in the second round of the playoffs, Feb. 17.

Washington, who was also selected to the all-state this week, averaged 16.3 points and 4.7 rebounds for Fort Mill (17-12) this season.

Tamia Watkins, Andrew Jackson girls’ basketball: The 6-foot-2 junior scored 28 points, had eight rebounds, six steals, three assists and two blocks in an 89-41 win over Edisto in the first round of the S.C. 2A state playoffs, Feb. 14.

Watkins followed that up with 28 points, 21 rebounds, four assists, four steals and four blocks in a 73-40 win over Oceanside Collegiate in the second round, Feb. 17.

Watkins is averaging 26.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, three assists, 4.7 steals and 2.2 blocks per game for an Andrew Jackson team (24-4) that has won 18 straight games this season.

Marcia Watt, Clover girls’ basketball: The 5-foot-6 senior scored 15 points, grabbed five rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks in a 61-58 loss at J.L. Mann in the first round of the S.C. 5A state playoffs, Feb. 13.

Watt averaged 10.3. points, 1.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 3.1 steals per game for Clover (16-10) this season.
