Want to join Elk Grove’s diversity and inclusion commission? How to apply for the role

If you’ve thought about being a catalyst for change in diversity and inclusion in Elk Grove, now’s your chance to act.

Elk Grove is looking for a volunteer to fill its open seat on the city’s Diversity and Inclusion Commission. The city is seeking someone to exemplify one of the city’s most discussed characteristics: its diversity.

The Diversity and Inclusion Commission is a 10-member group established by the Elk Grove City Council. According to its website, it formally began as the Multicultural Committee in September 2011. Years later in July 2019, City Council dissolved the Multicultural Committee and rebranded it as the Diversity and Inclusion Commission, with modified tasks and objectives.

According to the application, members of the Diversity and Inclusion Commission assist the city through education and outreach, advocacy and engaging the community as ambassadors.

They also give feedback and recommendations to the City Council for creating a more equitable, accessible, safe, welcoming and inclusive government and community.

“The commission plays a pivotal role in engaging the community in Elk Grove’s diversity and inclusion efforts,” said Diversity and Inclusion Commission Chair Tina Lee-Vogt. “Serving on the commission is a great opportunity to work closely with staff and city council on diversity and inclusion policies. It’s also a great way to learn more about the wonderful cultures within our city.”

The position is a volunteer, non-paid position. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and Elk Grove residents. Availability to meet monthly on the third Tuesday of each month and participation in at least 70% of commission activities is required.

The position opened in January 2024. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, but the city will continue to accept submissions until a sufficient number of applicants have been received.

Applications are available online and should be submitted to Elk Grove city clerk Jason Lindgren at jlindgren@elkgrovecity.org.
