Warm weather with high of 19C on the way for London after cold April

Temperatures across Britain are set to rise this week as rainfall gives way to clearer skies, the Met Office has said.

The mercury on Sunday was only expected to reach a maximum of 13C but by Thursday that should shoot up to 19C across Greater London.

The week begins with much-awaited sunshine in the capital on Monday, with a high of 16C, before cloud and overcast conditions set in later in the week, coupled with a high of 19C expected for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Other capitals will also see a surge in temperatures with Cardiff and Belfast hitting temperature of 16C by Tuesday.

Across the UK, there has been an average of 99mm of rainfall in April so far which is 27 per cent higher than usual for the month.

The Met Office has said the second half of April has been unseasonably cold while the first part of the month was relatively warm.

Amy Bokota, a senior meteorologist, told Sky it has actually been "on the warmer side of average” overall in April.

She added: “It has been a been a month of two halves... Quite warm for the first half, and then quite cool up until now."

The expert said It has definitely been "wetter than average for the UK as a whole", leaving many areas of the UK have "quite dull so far for the time of year".

Grey skies and rain have made April feel unusually cold, the Met Office has said.

The highest temperature recorded since the start of April was 21.8C in Writtle, Essex, with a low of -6.3C in Shap in Cumbria.

The coldest part of the UK on Saturday night was Braemar in Aberdeenshire, where it dropped to -5.2C much below the UK April average of 8.4C (47F).
