The on-screen romance between Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh starts with a crash.
A24 has released the first trailer for We Live in Time, which shows their characters meeting under unusual circumstances. Tobias (Garfield) awakens in a hospital bed with a neck brace, wondering where his underpants are, as Almut (Pugh) reassures him from across the room. “So sorry, but do we know each other?” he asks.
She struggles to answer. “Ye– no, um…” We then see a Mini Cooper slamming into a pedestrian on the road. “I ran you over. Sorry,” she whispers. “It’s all right,” he responds.

Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield in 'We Live in Time'In a scene that looks like it takes place after a passionate night together, Tobias stands pantsless in Almut’s house, saying, “Probably ought to get going.” Almut tries to convince him to stay: “Who says? Unless you have s--- to do, then…” “I have nothing,” he responds, relieved.
From there, the trailer rapidly cuts between glimpses of happy moments between the two characters, including a walk in the park, a dinner party, and a kiss in the kitchen. “Whether we like it or not, the clock is ticking,” Tobias says. “What’s the rush?” Almut asks. “Because I am worried that there’s a very distinct and real possibility that I am about to fall in love with you.”
The highs and lows become far more dramatic: Almut sits in a doctor’s office with a shaved head, suggesting a serious medical diagnosis, and also discovers she’s pregnant in a scene from earlier in the timeline. We also see the couple riding carnival rides, giving birth, dancing in a club, ice skating, and playing with their young daughter.
“I’m not interested in a treatment that accidentally wastes our time,” Almut says as Tobias shaves her head. It seems that she later has a change of heart, though, as her partner asks, “Why are you taking the risk?” and she tearfully replies, “I can’t bear the thought of being forgotten.”
The trailer ends on a lighter note, with Tobias struggling to exit a tight parallel parking spot and slamming into the car ahead of him. Based on the tearjerking tone of the rest of the footage, it’s entirely possible that this is the only moment of levity in the entire film.
“Making this movie was such an unbelievably beautiful experience,” Pugh wrote in a post sharing the film’s poster on Instagram Tuesday. “I’m thrilled and proud to say that it’s nearly here for all of you to watch soon.”

The film from Brooklyn's John Crowley is Pugh’s latest in an impressive run of high-profile projects, which has included Midsommar, Little Women, Black Widow, Don’t Worry Darling, Oppenheimer, and Dune: Part Two. Meanwhile, Garfield recently received an Oscar nomination for his performance in Tick, Tick… Boom!, an Emmy nod for his work in Under the Banner of Heaven, and played a key role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which currently stands as the seventh highest grossing movie of all time at the worldwide box office.
