Watch Canada score the fastest goal in Olympic soccer history
We were only a little more than two hours into the 2016 Olympics, and already, we have a record-breaking performance.
It comes courtesy of Canada’s women’s soccer team and Janine Beckie, who scored 20 seconds into the team’s Olympic opener against Australia.
Per the NBC Sports Network broadcast, Beckie’s goal is the fastest in Olympic soccer history, men’s or women’s. The men’s record is held by Mexico’s Oribe Peralta.
What makes the goal even more remarkable is that Australia kicked off the game, and held possession for the first 14 seconds. Veteran striker and captain Christine Sinclair, Canada’s all-time leading goal scorer, pounced on a weak pass and provided perfect service for Beckie.
Beckie, who is just 21 years old, plays her club soccer in the United States for the Houston Dash of the National Women’s Soccer League. Wednesday was her Olympic debut.
Canada went on to win the game 2-0 despite having a player sent off in the first half.
Canada-Australia is the second of six women’s soccer games on Wednesday, the first day of Olympic competition. In the first game, Sweden beat South Africa, 1-0.
The U.S. women get their tournament started Wednesday at 6 p.m. EST against New Zealand.
