Injury report, top storylines for the game

  • South Carolina injuries: Receivers Antwane “Juice” Wells (lower body injury) and Nyck Harbor (undisclosed) are excited to play Saturday, coach Shane Beamer said on 107.5 The Game’s Carolina Calls radio show Thursday. But defensive lineman Jatius Geer, linebacker Bam Martin-Scott and tight end Connor Cox will not play.

  • Quarterback battle: UNC quarterback Drake Maye has been hyped up as one of the best in the country and a serious Heisman candidate. But Spencer Rattler shouldn’t be overlooked. A win in Charlotte could boost Rattler’s confidence before a tough stretch of games in the weeks to follow (against Georgia and Tennessee on the road).

  • New offensive coordinators: Both South Carolina and UNC will debut new O.C. hires this weekend in Dowell Loggains and Chip Lindsey. What will their offenses look like?

  • Battle of the Carolinas: Aside from influencing current season records and the all-time series mark between these two teams, a Gamecock win could make an impact on the recruiting trail as well. Beamer has been vocal about wanting to sign more players from North Carolina. A victory Saturday could send a message to recruits that coming to Columbia might be more advantageous than staying home.

  • SEC supremacy: USC-UNC is the second SEC-ACC matchup of Week 1. First there’s No. 12 Tennessee vs. Virginia Saturday at noon, and then there’s No. 5 LSU vs. No. 8 Florida State pm Sunday. If South Carolina wins its game, the SEC could conquer the weekend.

Weather forecast for Charlotte

The National Weather Service predicts Saturday will be sunny with a high of about 81 degrees and northeast winds of 5 to 7 mph. Saturday night temperatures will be in the 70s for the game.
