Waterford Hospital getting $650K for mental health upgrade

New mental health facility to be part of Health Sciences Centre, replacing Waterford Hospital

The only emergency room dedicated to mental health issues in Newfoundland and Labrador is getting some much needed upgrades.

The Newfoundland and Labrador government said on Thursday that it's putting $650,000 into the psychiatric assessment unit at the Waterford Hospital in St. John's.

The money will go towards renovations and hiring more staff, including a new nurse.

"Deficiencies in the psychiatric assessment unit must be addressed," a statement from Health Minister John Haggie read.

"This redevelopment plan is an important transition that will ensure people in mental health crisis, and the staff who care for them, have access to a high quality facility that meets their needs."

The department said the renovations will improve patient experience and enhance care.

Renovations and recruitment of the new nurse should get underway in the coming weeks.

Mental health advocates have long argued that a new hospital is needed to replace the aging Waterford building, but plans are on hold because of a budget crunch.
