A bundled duo huddled together in beach chairs enjoys the warmth of the sun as a stiff breeze comes off the Atlantic Ocean on the frigid morning of Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025 on Hilton Head Island. For the first weeks of the new year a polar vortex from the high Arctic will bring freezing temperatures to parts of the deep south.

Understanding the difference between “minor” and moderate” impacts

The current forecast shows a 40 to 60 percent chance for winter precipitation causing minor effects, or enough accommodation to cause some travel issues. There is a 20 to 40 percent chance for snow and ice to create moderate impacts, which occur when there’s enough snow and ice to create a risk for life and property.

A recent announcement from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Management said that following discussions Friday afternoon, Superintendent Rodgriguez will make any decisions about school closures on Monday.
