Welcome back: Former Gamecock Gilber Edmond returning to South Carolina

South Carolina’s Gilber Edmond during the Gamecocks’ Oct. 22, 2022 game against Texas A&M at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Edge rusher Gilber Edmond is heading back to South Carolina.

Edmond, from Fort Pierce, Florida, spent three years with USC before transferring to Florida State last season. He’ll spend the 2024 season back with the Gamecocks, according to TheBigSpur and GamecockCentral.

Edmond is on campus and officially back with the team, GamecockCentral reported Monday, citing sources.

And Edmond offered his own confirmation of his return by quoting a verse from South Carolina’s alma mater.

“We hail thee Carolina and sing thy high praise,” Edmond posted Monday morning to X, formerly Twitter.

Edmond played in all 14 games for the Seminoles in 2023 and started in their bowl game versus Georgia. Edmond recorded 23 tackles (eight solo, 1.5 tackles for loss), two quarterback hurries and one sack.

In his three seasons with the Gamecocks, Edmond appeared in 21 games (starting 10 as a redshirt sophomore in 2022) and recorded 44 tackles, including 9.5 for loss with 2.0 sacks.

His decision to leave South Carolina was a bit of a surprise, as Edmond was projected to take on a larger role for the Gamecocks in 2023. Now that he’s back from 2024, that same expectation will be there with a position group that lost Jordan Strachan (eligibility) and is in need of experience.
