Where is he now? What happened to Deuce Hogan after season 4 of ‘QB1’

First-round NFL Draft picks Bryce Young and Anthony Richardson might be getting most of the attention from the fourth season of the documentary show “QB1: Beyond the Lights,” but the third quarterback featured in the show is still playing football as well.

Former Texas high school star Deuce Hogan began his college career at Iowa but has since transferred to Kentucky. Here is a closer look at how Hogan’s career has gone since his season of QB1 was filmed in 2019.

How did Deuce Hogan play at Iowa?

After signing with Iowa as a four-star recruit, Hogan enrolled in time for the 2020 season. He redshirted that fall without appearing in a game.

Hogan spent most of the 2021 season as Iowa’s third quarterback, but he did make his collegiate debut in the fourth quarter of a 51-14 blowout of Maryland in October. He completed his only pass attempt for 2 yards in the win.

Why did Deuce Hogan transfer from Iowa?

Following Iowa’s 2021 regular-season finale against Nebraska, Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz made a joke at Hogan’s expense when discussing the flu that risked sidelining the team’s top two quarterbacks for the game.

“If it was Deuce, with all due respect to Deuce, I might have stayed in Iowa City,” Ferentz said of the prospect of having to play his third quarterback.

Just a few days after the game, Hogan entered the transfer portal. In a Facebook post, his mother, Amy Hogan, confirmed the joke played into the decision to transfer.

“Deuce did not leave because of playing time,” Amy Hogan wrote, according to reports from Iowa at the time. “The head coach slandered him in a press conference. Very out of character for the head coach … he was trying to be funny … unfortunately, there was not backtracking on his mistake. He has since apologized to Deuce, to the team, and the media. But Deuce cannot play for him … and everyone in the facility understands why.”

After Hogan entered the portal, Ferentz did make an effort to clarify the comment in his next news conference.

“Probably been more appropriate if I said our third quarter instead of naming his name,” Ferentz said. “But I’m not real comfortable with any third quarterback being in the game until they get to work as a 1 or 2. But he’s a talented young guy.”

Hogan’s college career added another wrinkle when he committed to Kentucky, as a walk-on, prior to the Jan. 1 Citrus Bowl between the Hawkeyes and Wildcats. Kentucky won that game 20-17.

“I was told when I was being recruited out of high school to go where you’re the most wanted,” Hogan later told reporters. “That was the best advice. It was actually coach Jimbo Fisher who told me that. I was asking a lot of people for their advice, and that was a recurring theme: Go where you’re the most wanted, where your opportunity will be the biggest.

“When I entered the portal, I had a lot of schools hitting me up, Twitter DMs and Instagram, stuff like that. Kentucky, I just felt love. I felt very desired here and felt like I had a cool opportunity. Then you get a chance to play in the best conference in football. So, just the situation I was stepping into as well as the way I felt I was being pursued.”

Hogan is the second Kentucky quarterback to be featured on QB1. Former Wildcat Nik Scalzo was one of three quarterbacks showcased in the third season of the show.

How has Deuce Hogan played at Kentucky?

When Hogan arrived in Lexington, the Wildcats already had a clear starter in eventual second-round NFL Draft pick Will Levis.

Hogan battled with redshirt freshman Kaiya Sheron for the primary backup job in preseason camp. He opened the season at No. 2 on the depth chart and made his Kentucky debut late in the season opener against Miami (Ohio). He did not attempt a pass in that game or a late cameo appearance in the Wildcats’ week two win at Florida.

Sheron eventually passed Hogan on the depth chart, starting a game against South Carolina when Levis was sidelined by turf toe. Both quarterbacks were edged out by freshman Destin Wade for the start in the 2022 Music City Bowl against Iowa after Levis opted out of the game.

Wade played the majority of the bowl game, but Hogan did have the chance to make a late appearance against his former team. Hogan completed 6 of 7 passes for 19 yards in the 21-0 loss.

As of August 2023, Hogan, who has the strongest arm of Kentucky’s quarterbacks, was competing with Sheron and Wade to back up N.C. State transfer Devin Leary.

“All three of those guys right now behind Devin are getting opportunities with the second offense,” offensive coordinator Liam Coen said. “Every single one of those guys has and will continue to do so really until we truly decide on who that’s going to be.”
