Why Stephen Jones said Martavis Bryant brings Dallas Cowboys something that they didn’t have

The Dallas Cowboys are in no rush to get wide receiver Martavis Bryant on the field after signing him to the practice squad on Tuesday.

After being indefinitely suspended for multiple violations of the league’s substance abuse policy, Bryant has not played in the NFL since 2018.

So the Cowboys are going to take their time and allow him to get in shape.

But the team saw first hand at practice on Thursday why the front office was intrigued by Bryant, who at 6-foot-5, 215 pounds, looks nothing like anyone the Cowboys have on the roster at the position.

“I think the biggest thing is he brings a body type, his size, his speed, his length, the whole nine yards that’s something we just don’t have in our receiving corps,” vice president Stephen Jones said. “Nothing against the guys we got here, but we were watching him practice (Thursday) and he’s just about a head taller than the rest of the crew. He’s got a good pedigree. He obviously played and played well in this league before. We just thought it was a good use of a practice squad spot. I love our receiving crew but he has a body type we just don’t have in our receiving corps.”

Bryant, who scored 17 touchdowns in four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders before the suspension, can still run fast and is big play threat.

The Cowboys looking at as a no-lose situation. They like their guys at receiver, led by CeeDee Lamb, who has 57 catches for 824 yards and three touchdowns.

But they Cowboys are lacking a mismatch in the red zone on the outside.

And they are hoping that Bryant can potentially contribute a play or two at some point during the season or the playoffs.
