Slippery highways around province, heavy snow on way

Some heavy snowfalls are expected across southern Saskatchewan Thursday and Friday.

That follows a morning of slippery highways around the province. The Highways Department was not recommending travel on a number of them.

According to the Highway Hotline, ice, snow and slippery conditions were widespread. With falling, drifting and swirling snow, there was reduced visibility on many routes.

Among the province's trouble spots was the Saskatoon area, where travel was not recommended on Highway 41 from the junction of Highway 27 to Wakaw and on Highway 2 from Wakaw to the junction of Highway 27.

For a while, drivers were also being advised to stay off highways around Lloydminster as well as roads from Tisdale to Nipawin, from Kindersley to Unity, and from Meadow Lake to St. Walburg.

Heavy snow and colder temperatures are expected later today as a weather system called a Colorado Low moves through Saskatchewan.

At least one semi-trailer ended up in the ditch west of the Battlefords on Highway 40.
