Ontario wife one-ups husband's $500 lottery win with $50,000 Instant Bingo prize

Toronto, Canada - August 13, 2019: OLG Prize centre in Toronto, Canada. Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is a Crown corporation owned by the Government of Ontario.

An Ontario couple is taking the expression “lucky in love” to a whole other level after they discovered they each won lottery prizes on the same day, although the wife’s pot was significantly more.

Gabriela Engel, from Brampton, bought a $3 Bingo scratch card and decided to buy another one with the change she had left. The daycare worker, who plays Instant Bingo once a week, says that extra ticket paid off because she won the top prize of $50,000 on that ticket.

“I’m so happy I picked that ticket!” the 55-year-old said. “It was a surreal moment.”

When she learned of the exciting news, she immediately reached out to her husband, who had also come into some good fortune.

“He won $500 earlier that day – so when I won $50,000, I had to rub it in his face,” she laughed.

Engel is going to use some of her winnings to pay off bills. She’s also planning a trip to Europe.

“[This is] the most I’ve ever won!” Engel said.

She bought the winning ticket at Avo Convenience Supermarket on Earlsbridge Boulevard in Brampton.
