Windsor city councillor Mark McKenzie is seeking the nomination of the Conservative Party of Canada, he announced Thursday morning.

McKenzie wants to represent the new riding of Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore in the upcoming federal election. He was elected as the Ward 4 councillor in October 2022.

In a statement, McKenzie says affordability is the major issue prompting him to run for federal office.

He also noted safe neighbourhoods, housing  and being "tougher on criminals" as other priorities.

Also running for the nomination are Victor Green, Kathy Borrelli, Tige Melton and James Dorner. The riding was created in 2022 after a federal electoral redistribution process, done every 10 years to ensure representation across moving and growing population centres.

It will take in the eastern parts of Windsor currently included in the riding of Windsor-Tecumseh, the Town of Tecumseh and northwestern Lakeshore.

The parts of Lakeshore included in the riding are: starting at the intersection of  the westerly limit of Lakeshore and Highway 401, east along the highway to the Puce River and north along the river to Lake St. Clair and north in a straight line to the northern limit of the town.

The riding of Windsor-Tecumseh is currently represented by Liberal MP Irek Kusmierczyk.

The next federal election will take place in October 2025.
