Windsor labour activist Rolly Marentette remembered for his 'commitment to workplace justice'

Windsor's labour movement is mourning one of its building blocks — Rolly Marentette.

Marentette died Wednesday following a battle with cancer, according to Former CAW National President Ken Lewenza.

"Rolly was a fighter, he was outspoken, but he was an incredibly compassionate person who cared for everyone," he said, describing his friend as a teacher to thousands.

"He committed his whole life to helping others," Lewenza added.

The labour activist was the "heart and soul" of Windsor's large National Day of Mourning ceremony, according to Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Percy Hatfield.

Marentette worked with Hatfield to draft a bill requiring that flags be lowered to half-mast every April 28, a legacy the politician said will live on in his honour.

"Right across Ontario on the Day of Mourning we lower those flags and Rolly Marentte is the reason we do that," he said. "He'll long be remembered in labour circles."
