Man attacks Wingate University student on campus with knife

Wingate University in Union County was briefly put on lockdown Friday night after a student was attacked on campus by a person with a knife. Authorities apprehended the male suspect after about 30 minutes and the lockdown was lifted.

The campus went into lockdown shortly after 8 p.m. A student on campus suffered cuts to a hand but was able to run away. A university spokeswoman said Wingate police and Union County sheriff’s deputies “quickly arrived on campus, located the person fitting the description of the attacker, and apprehended him.” The student is being treated for “minor injuries.”

The suspect is not a student, the spokeswoman said.

“Wingate University has issued immediate lock-down procedures for the Wingate campus,” an alert to the campus community said shortly after 8:00 p.m. “Please lock all doors and windows and await further instructions.”

About 30 minutes later, the campus issued another alert saying, “The lockdown has been lifted. Police have the individual in custody.”

Before the individual was apprehended, police were looking for a white male wearing a red hoodie armed with a knife, another alert said.

Wingate is a private liberal arts university with about 3,500 students just east of Monroe.
