2 firefighters recovering from burns after Bruce Avenue blaze

Two firefighters are recovering at home following a blaze on Winnipeg's Bruce Avenue that left them with significant burns.

They were treated in hospital this morning, and Alex Forrest, president of the United Firefighters of Winnipeg, called the incident a "close call."

"I can tell you this was a very, very, scary situation," he said.

"We're going to be assisting these firefighters for some time to deal with the situation."

The crew was looking for people in the basement of the Bruce Avenue home when they became tangled in wires, Forrest said.

That's when a flashover happened.

"We had almost 60 firefighters on scene assisting the firefighters. It's very traumatic for all firefighters," Forrest said.

"We're always concerned of such things as [post-traumatic stress disorder] so right away we put them in contact with the critical incident stress management teams."

Crews had been called to the home around 12 a.m. on Saturday. Two tenants, both men, aged 46 and 50, escaped the fire.

Forrest said working as a team can be credited for the successful rescue of both firefighters on Saturday.

"It's our training and teamwork that allows us to deal with such dangerous situations," he wrote in a post on Facebook.

The damage estimate in the aftermath of the fire is upwards of $100,000.

There's no word on what caused the blaze.
