Winnipeg travel expert says different destinations becoming popular in wake of global attacks

Winnipegger Max Johnson has been watching events around the world including the mass shooting in Munich and the Bastille Day attack in France but it's not stopping him from getting on a plane to his next destination.

Johnson is the founder of Great Canadian Travel and is currently in the south of France. He said that despite what may seem like random attacks travellers are still packing airports to get to their destinations.

"I don't think that the risks of travel are really any greater today than they were a month ago, a year ago, or two years ago," he said.

"Unfortunately when incidents happen they tend to be considerably splashier. But given the number of people that are wandering around and the number of incidents the odds of anybody getting caught up with one are so remote that I don't think it's really a great concern."

Johnson said that it hasn't stopped people but it has changed where they are going.

"[It] is not so much that people are not travelling but they are choosing different destinations," he said.

"[These] are destinations with, should one say, lower probabilities."

Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro are becoming more popular travel havens.

Some people may still have to go through the transportation hubs of major airports and Johnson said there is a larger police presence and security to keep people calm. He added there's a way to reduce some of that the related anxiety.

"Red wine will always do the trick of keeping one's anxiety down," he said with a laugh.

"I think that in general simply taking it stride and realizing … the odds are so remote."
