Dozens of Winnipeggers rally against Child and Family Services

Dozens of Winnipeggers marched from the Children's Hospital to The Forks Saturday morning, calling on the province to improve its child welfare system.

The walk, hosted by the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, had a brief stop at the Winnipeg Remand Centre and culminated in a standing up ceremony at The Forks with the AMC's Grand Chief Derek Nepinak.

There are more than 10,000 children in the care of Child and Family Services in Manitoba, and the vast majority are aboriginal.

Last month, the children's advocate for Manitoba's First Nations, Cora Morgan, claimed CFS was seizing a record number of newborn babies – as many as 40 per month from a single hospital.

The number of deaths of children in care has also been on the rise in recent years.

The province's CFS system has been under scrutiny since Tina Fontaine, a 15-year-old girl who was in CFS care, went missing and was found dead weeks later. Her homicide remains unsolved.
