Woman, 14-Year-Old Girl and Dog Found Dead in Brooklyn Apartment

A woman and 14-year-old girl were found dead inside a Brooklyn apartment on Monday in a gruesome scene, PEOPLE can confirm.
At around 2:33 p.m., officers responded to a wellness check at 1296 New York Avenue in the 67th Precinct area, according to a news release by the NYPD. Officers discovered a girl, 14, and a woman, 37, “unconscious and unresponsive inside the location with trauma to the body.”
A dog was also found dead with a bag over its head, authorities told NBC New York.
The two females were aided by EMS and declared dead at the scene, per the release. The causes of death will be determined by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office and there have been no arrests, the NYPD said, adding the investigation is ongoing and the identities of the victims are pending family notification.
According to NBC New York, the victims died from stab wounds and a 38-year-old man broke down the door to discover the bodies on Monday. He was then questioned by police, the outlet reported.

Sources told CBS News New York that the victims were mother and daughter, and neighbors had not heard from them in days. Neighbors said they had lived in the building for three or four months, per the outlet.

On Friday, neighbor Steve Schor said he called police after hearing screaming from the apartment, per CBS New York.

"We heard screaming, we heard the dog whimpering. I vividly remember telling 911 it sounds like someone was getting killed upstairs," Schor told the outlet, adding that officers responded to the apartment, but didn’t know if they interacted with anyone inside.
Schor added, “I just hope they get the person."
Another neighbor told CBS New York it was “very disheartening to hear something like that.”
“I’ve lived here many years,” she said. “We never had anything like this.”
