Hit-and-run at Dundas and Sherbourne leaves woman, 45, in life-threatening condition

A 45-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries after she was hit by a vehicle that left the scene downtown early Tuesday, Toronto police say.

Const. Clint Stibbe, spokesperson for Toronto Police Service's Traffic Services, said the vehicle failed to remain at Dundas Street East and Sherbourne Street. He said the woman was on the road when she was struck.

"At approximately 4 o'clock this morning, a 45-year-old woman placed herself intentionally on the roadway and a motor vehicle, a description of which will be made available a little bit later this morning, proceeded on Dundas to strike the woman," he said.

"The driver of the motor vehicle and the vehicle failed to remain at the scene and we are currently searching for that vehicle. We are asking anybody that was in the area, if they believe they may have struck something, to contact police as soon as possible."

Stibbe said police are also seeking witnesses to the collision.

Acting Staff Sgt. Craig Somers, of Toronto Police Service's 51 Division, said police received a call about the hit-and-run at 4:07 a.m.

Somers said the caller told police that the woman was lying on the ground before she was struck.

"We don't know why the person was lying down. We are investigating," Somers said. "We're trying to get statements."

Police interviewing eyewitnesses

Toronto paramedics said they took the woman to a trauma centre. Stibbe said the woman remains in hospital in life-threatening condition.

Police are interviewing eyewitnesses and trying to obtain security camera video of the accident.

Dundas Street East is closed from Sherbourne to Ontario Streets as police investigate. Police said it will likely be closed for a few hours.

"The intersection itself is open. Anything east of Sherbourne is closed," Stibbe said.

Police's Forensic Identification Services and collision reconstruction officers are at the scene.

No description of the vehicle has been released.

The TTC is diverting its 505 Dundas streetcar, both eastbound and westbound, due to the collision and it said in tweets that shuttle buses are operating.
