Woman mauled by wolves while jogging through animal sanctuary near Paris

A woman was hospitalized after being mauled by wolves while jogging through an animal enclosure at a zoo near Paris over the weekend.

The attack occurred at a zoo and safari park in Thoiry, located roughly 31 miles west of Paris.

The 37-year-old woman, who was staying at the zoo’s tourist accommodations, Agence France-Presse reported, was jogging Sunday morning in an area of the zoo that is normally restricted to vehicles and where animals roam freely when she was attacked by a trio of wolves.

The woman reportedly sustained injuries “in the neck, calf and back,” Maryvonne Caillibotte, public prosecutor in Versailles, told AFP.

When asked how the woman had managed to enter the animal enclosure, Caillibotte declined to specify whether the woman made a mistake or the animal enclosure was not marked well enough, AFP reported.

The woman was rescued after zoo staffers heard her cries for help. She was then taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The Wow Safari Thoiry, established in 1968, is home to 1,500 animals kept on roughly 370 acres of land outside of Paris. According to the zoo’s website, stays offer the chance to “relax and live a unique experience in complete privacy with the Arctic wolves that you can observe night and day from your living room.”
