A Winnipeg woman told her friends in a video group chat that she had hit a tree with her vehicle in southeastern Manitoba before they lost contact with her earlier this week, police say.

Whitemouth RCMP received a missing person report for Brittany Dawn Storey, 29, shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday, a Saturday news release said.

The Winnipeg woman was near Rennie — a small community just west of Whiteshell Provincial Park — in a group chat with friends when she said that she struck a tree and the call was lost, police said.

Repeated attempts to reach Storey over the phone after that call were unsuccessful, police said. Storey has not shown up to her workplace, returned to her home in Winnipeg or been active on social media since.

Jada Storey, Brittany's younger sister, says the people on the video call heard a crash before Brittany's screen went blank.

She said people have since speculated on social media about what happened to her sister but urges them to instead contact RCMP with any tips.

"Telling us, and then worrying us, is just not very helpful at this point," she told CBC on Saturday.

"If you think that's just a hunch, that could lead us somewhere."

'We need to find her': mother

Police have patrolled the area between Rennie and Winnipeg but found no sign of Brittany Storey or her vehicle, which is a white 2016 Dodge Journey with the Manitoba licence plate LFR 884.

Denise Johnson, Brittany's mother, says her family have been desperately searching for her daughter since Thursday.

"We've driven every day, from morning till night, looking."

She says RCMP told them Saturday morning they have requested information from a few social media sites in order to determine her daughter's location.

"Keep an eye out for her vehicle," said Johnson. "We need to find her."

Brittany is described as six feet tall and 130 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call Whitemouth RCMP at 204-348-2935, or to submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
