Person in custody after rooftop standoff in Woodland prompted nearby schools to lock down
The Woodland Police Department called for residents to remain inside and schools to lock down after a suspect accused of assault with a deadly weapon fled police officers and climbed onto a resident’s roof.
Officers were looking for the suspect in the area of West Ashley Avenue and South Beamer Street, according to a social media post around 1:50 p.m. by the Police Department. He has a felony warrant out for his arrest, department spokesman Sgt. Richard Towle said.
Police said in a social media update just after 5:30 p.m. that the suspect was “safely taken into custody.”
Rhoda Maxwell Elementary School and Greengate School were put on lockdown during the incident, Towle said.
Students of the two schools were being transported to Woodland High School via bus, police said in an update. Parents were told to pick up their students at the high school’s small gym.
