World War II era bomb found in Coquitlam closet

A contractor working in a Coquitlam home made a potentially explosive discovery earlier this week — a Second World War era bomb sitting loosely in a closet.

What followed was one of the most unusual calls the Coquitlam R.C.M.P. say they've ever received on their 911 line.

"Thankfully, the complainant did the right thing by calling us immediately," said Corporal Jamie Chung.

"The bomb that was found may have been a training device used by the military around the World War II era. But there still could be a small charge in there."

Members of the Royal Canadian Navy Explosives Ordnance Disposal Team were called to the house in the 100 block of Logan Street and were able to secure the device without incident.

An investigation revealed that the home owner's late grandfather was a retired member of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Chung says the contractor did the right thing by immediately exiting the house and calling police.

"If you ever find something like firearms or explosives, always treat them as loaded or live and do not touch or disturb them in any way. Call 911 and describe what you found and where you found it."
