The world's strongest coffee now available in Ottawa
The world’s strongest coffee is now brewing in Ottawa, and its makers are betting on the fact you’re not planning on sleeping anytime soon.
Black Insomnia Coffee first hit the market on Amazon back in March, and the online buzz has been steadily increasing ever since. Marketed as the coffee with the highest caffeine content in the world, the South African-owned brand boasts about 720mg of caffeine per 12oz cup — more than seven times the average Starbucks drip coffee.
Now Ottawa residents will be able to pick up a fresh cup at La Bottega Nicastro, an Italian specialty food store and cafe in the city’s ByWard Market. CTV News Ottawa reports that the shop recently began carrying the coffee, though even the shop’s barista seemed nervous about trying the new blend.
That nervousness is not entirely unfounded. Doctors recommend a maximum daily caffeine consumption of 400mg, and a single cup of Black Insomnia is nearly double that.
In fact the coffee makers themselves urge caution in the consumption of the beverage they produce. Information on their website includes the following advice:
“We know how great it tastes, and feels… but try not overdo it! 1 – 2 cups a day should be all you’ll need for your average Monday. This is the coffee for the people who sleep when they want, work when they want, and play when they want.”
So before you run out to grab a cup, know that the brand’s hashtag is “#SleepingIsCheating,” and then carefully consider whether you want to take a sip.
