‘Yellowstone’ prequel series to film in Texas this summer. How you can be in it

Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” prequel series starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren will film its new season over the summer in Texas.

“1923” follows the Dutton family of old in the early 20th century as they contend with the rise of western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression. Sheridan created and wrote all eight episodes of Season 1, which premiered on Paramount+ in December 2022.

The series was renewed for a second go-around last year and will begin filming scenes for its new season in Austin this month, according to local talent agency Legacy Casting.

Legacy posted several notices for background actors on the casting website MyCastingFile regarding “1923” Season 2. Filming dates vary with each casting notice, but the consensus shows that filming will begin in and around Austin in mid-July.

The first season of “1923” was filmed in Montana, South Africa, Kenya and Malta.

What is ‘1923’ about?

“1923” is a prequel series and follows the ancestors of the Dutton family, who make up the contemporary-set “Yellowstone.”

Ford and Mirren star as Jacob and Cara Dutton, the great-great-grand-uncle and aunt of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton. Costner starred as the family patriarch on “Yellowstone” for five seasons but recently announced that he was not returning for the show’s final episodes.

Along with Ford and Mirren, “1923” also stars Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, Darren Mann, Jerome Flynn, Aminah Nieves and Isabel May. The series also boasts a large list of supporting players such as James Badge Dale, Robert Patrick, Marley Shelton and Timothy Dalton.

As of Wednesday, Paramount has not officially announced when “1923” will begin filming in Texas. However, along with the notices from Legacy Casting, the Austin American-Statesman reports that city documents state the series will film in there this summer.

“1923” is Sheridan’s latest television series to film in Texas. The first season of Billy Bob Thornton, starring Landman, was filmed in Fort Worth for several months this year, and the second season of Lioness is also in production in Cowtown.

No release date has been announced for “1923” Season 2, but whenever it does, it will do so on Paramount+.
