'Zero tolerance' for bad driving in school zones, police say
Peel students are heading back to school and police say they will be schooling drivers who don't follow the rules of the road.
Peel Regional Police say that officers will be "out in full force" in school zones and along school routes in the days ahead. They are going to be employing a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to enforcing traffic rules.
Police are reminding drivers that buses are going to be out picking up students early in the day, including when it is still dark outside.
If a bus has stopped and its lights are flashing, drivers must come to a complete stop behind it. A minimum $400 fine and six demerit points await those who fail to obey the law.
Tens of thousands of students attend Catholic and public schools in Peel Region.
The Peel District School Board's most recent annual report says that it had nearly 153,000 students in its elementary and secondary schools, as of September of last year. The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School had nearly 83,000 students enrolled in its schools as of the end of March.
