Alberta sees highest jump in beer sales

Though other provinces including Quebec allow beer and wine sales in corner stores, Ontario has long resisted loosening its laws.

Alberta posted the highest year-over-year increase in beer sales in the country at 7 per cent, according to new numbers released by Statistics Canada.

There was also an increase in wine and hard liquor sales. On average, Albertans bought 5.7 per cent more alcohol than the year before — spending more than $2 billion in total sales.

The findings measured alcohol sales for the year ending in March 2012. In total, Canadians spent almost $21 billion on alcohol.

Newfoundland and Labrador posted the biggest jump in wine sales at nearly 13 per cent.
