PQ candidate steps down over anti-Islam Facebook post

Welcome to election campaigns in the era of social media.

It looks like the Journal de Montreal is Facebook stalking all the candidates in the Quebec election.

Earlier this week, they spotted a post by PQ candidate Jean Carrière. Carrière, the candidate for Lafontaine, had posted an image of a half-naked women with text that said "F#$% Islam."

On Thursday, he took to Facebook again to announce that he was bowing out of the race. He also explained the reason for the picture: In French, he said that there are two types of Islamists — moderates and radicals — and claimed that the post was intended to show his disgust of some religious practices that oppress women.

The PQ has accepted his resignation.

On a much lighter note, the French-language newspaper also uncovered some Facebook pictures of a Coaltion Avenir Quebec candidate Steven Fleurent baring his butt.

Fleurent, 21,will however stay in the race. CAQ leader François Legault wrote off the pics as youthful hijinks.

The morale of these stories: if you have any political ambitions whatsoever, be careful with what you say and post on social media.
