Toronto Mayor Rob Ford under investigation for placing fridge magnets on cars

We've had our share of wacky Rob Ford stories over the past couple of years.

But this has to be one of the wackiest.

On Wednesday morning, the Toronto Star broke a news story about another...ahem...Ford scandal.

The venerable newspaper reported that Toronto's mayor spent about 15 minutes, the previous evening, in an Etobicoke parking lot placing fridge magnets — with included his name and home phone number — on cars.

Minutes after Mayor Rob Ford arrived at a contentious community council meeting in Etobicoke on Tuesday evening, he bolted out of his seat, sprinted up an aisle, and left the building — to wander around the parking lot and slap “Rob Ford Mayor” fridge magnets on the doors of cars.

When a reporter told Ford that some people might find his behaviour strange, he retorted that some people find the reporter strange. Magnets in hand, he made no further comment.

According to Sun News one resident who received one of those magnets put them up on Kijiji for sale, sort of.

"Pair of very lightly used Rob Ford car magnets (may also double as a fridge magnet but no promises). Hand installed by The Mayor himself last night at the Humbertown redevelopment meeting in Etobicoke," the seller wrote.

"Will happily trade for one iota of progress on The City's transit file."

You can't make this stuff up.

On Wednesday evening, however, the story took an even stranger twist.

Tammy Robbinson, a city spokeswoman told the Globe and Mail that they've received a complaint and therefore are investigating Ford for his campaign faux pas.

"Our approach will be to follow normal procedure when we receive a complaint. So that’s to contact the complainant and advise that we’ll investigate and take appropriate action," she said in an interview.

The city's Director of Licensing suggested that the complaint involves bylaw 545-313 and could result in fines in the "range from $100 to $150."

The mayor has so far survived a conflict of interest court battle, allegations of alcoholism and groping and a defamation law suit.

Will he be able to survive magnet-gate?

Stay tuned.
