Doug Ford takes his time fulfilling promise to prove Rob Ford is in rehab

An early morning promise of evidence that would confirm Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was actually in rehab led to a day of waiting on Friday, after the mayor's brother vowed to end speculation about his troubled brother's whereabouts.

Doug Ford announced that he would provide the public with indisputable evidence that Rob Ford has been in rehab since he stepped down from office last week.

“We’ll put out something (Friday) that will prove that,” he told the Toronto Sun. “Since the day he went in, he has never been out in public.”

The promise came after the newspaper obtained even more embarrassing video of the mayor, reportedly shot during a debaucherous weekend last month. The Sun previously released audio of a drunken Ford making violent, racial and sexually aggressive comments, which is believed to be from the same night as the new video. The Globe and Mail reported on video of Ford allegedly smoking crack cocaine in his sister's basement, said to be shot the same weekend.

The allegations sent Ford spiraling toward rehab, though speculation has increased about whether he actually found it.

First, it was confirmed that Ford flew to Chicago but turned around without officially crossing the border. Then reports emerged that he had been seen at a Toronto Tim Hortons earlier this week - claims Doug Ford dismisses as misguided.

The mayor's brother, with whom he shares a passing resemblance, said it was actually him people saw at Tim Hortons. Tim Hortons officials have since corroborated the story.

Further, the Toronto Sun's Joe Warmington spoke with Ford earlier this week, at which time Ford claimed "rehab is amazing" and prompted speculation that he hadn't actually made it to a treatment centre. On Friday, Warmington reported that a source told him Ford had not been in rehab at the time of their conversation.

All this led Doug Ford to promise, once and for all, to prove the mayor was receiving treatment as promised. But through the day, the oft-controversial councillor brushed aside the issue.

A moment to promise, a day to follow through. Stay tuned.
