Officer Glenn Weddell charged with G20 riot assault found not guilty

The first police officer to face charges arising from how law enforcement agencies handled the G20 protests more three years ago has been found not guilty of assaulting a demonstrator.

CBC News reports that Const. Glenn Weddell was found not guilty of assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon related to riots that overtook Toronto's downtown on June 26, 2010.

Dorian Barton suffered a broken shoulder during the incident and alleged that an officer knocked him to the ground with a riot shield. He says he was struck several times before being dragged away.

Weddell testified that he was not responsible for Barton's injuries. He said he found Barton on the ground and only touched him to help him up.

Several protesters have faced charges for their actions during the 2010 riots, but Weddell was the first officer to face charges.

More to come.
