Calgary man shelters homeless in Japan

Calgarian David Halton, founder and CEO of BodyPlus International, was in his company's Sendai office when the earth started to shake.

"It started out kind of slow, similar to one we had a day or two ago and then it got progressively more intense, both side to side and up and down," Halton told the Calgary Sun.

In an instant, the world around him literally crumbled. An 8.9 magnitude earthquake rocked Japan. And Sendai was closest to its epicentre.

After running home to confirm that his family was safe, escaping the fates of many, the CEO was moved to action. Seeing that citizens, including some of his own staff, were suddenly homeless, he opened his office doors.

"We're giving shelter to kids and family," he said.

As of last Thursday, 17 people were already taking refuge in the office building with more expected to join them. Halton and his staff designated a "party room" as a safe area for people to eat and sleep.

Communicating to the Sun via Facebook, Halton shared,"We made it through another night. Mornings always bring some hope."
