Boy hit outside St. Timothy School should be OK, says schoolboard

Lowered speed limits around school zones likely helped save a young boy from serious injuries, according to the Catholic school board, after the Grade 1 student was hit by a vehicle outside of a school in northwest Edmonton.

The boy was crossing the street in front of St. Timothy Catholic Elementary School, at 143rd Avenue and 117th Street, in the middle of the block when he was hit by a pick-up truck.

He had been running across the street because he was late for class, said Lori Nagy, spokeswoman for the school board. Earlier this morning, the school board told CBC News he was crossing the street to meet his sister.

"The injuries at the time seemed quite serious because he had sustained a head injury," Nagy said.

"But the good news is that he will be alright."

The boy will be held overnight at the Stollery Children's Hospital for observation.

Nagy credits the city's recent decision to lower speed limits around schools for preventing his injuries from being more serious.

"If the driver had been going faster, I think we could have a very different (outcome) today," she said.

Police are still investigating the collision.
