French fry capital celebrates holiday
National French Fry Day might not be on everyone's calendar, but a town in western New Brunswick is getting ready to celebrate the so-called holiday on Friday.
Melanie Clark is the director of tourism for Florenceville-Bristol, the self-described "French fry capital of the world."
She said it makes sense to celebrate French fries in the heart of the province's potato country.
"We're going to have lots of French fry fun with free fries and activities. We're going to kick off our main events at Potato World ... that's where you learn how the potato is grown from seed to plate, how it evolves from a potato to a French fry. So, we're going to kick off the events with a French-fry cutting competition," she said.
National French Fry Day doesn't give New Brunswickers a day off of work, but it's embraced by some restaurants and greeting card companies.
Clark said a dietician will be on hand to share facts about the nutritional benefits of French fries in moderation.
Florenceville-Bristol is home to the headquarters of McCain Inc., one of the largest French fry providers in the world.
