Impaired driving checkpoints set up across province
The RCMP have set up checkpoints across Newfoundland and Labrador as part of an extra effort to catch impaired drivers in the act.
Cpl. Tony Young says the additional focus Saturday is part of National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.
Young said extra patrols will be out in certain parts of the province.
"[We'll be going] to areas where we've gotten a lot of reports from the community of a certain individual — or individuals — who are driving impaired at certain hours of the day or night," he said.
Young said at sobriety checkpoints, a number of police vehicles will stop vehicles in the area and talk to drivers, checking for any previous driving offences or signs of impairment.
"To get one impaired driver off the road, you're doing your job and it makes the roads a bit safer," he said.
Young said police want to encourage the public to call if they spot what may be an impaired driver, at any time of day.
